Ingredients
- 3–4 lb boneless pork shoulder (pork butt)
- 1 yellow onion (diced)
- 4 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 tbsp paprika
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)
- 12 slider buns
Instructions
- Prepare the Pork: Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder. In a small bowl, mix together paprika, brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper.
- Rub the Pork: Generously rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it’s evenly coated.
- Sear the Pork (Optional): In a large skillet, sear the pork on all sides over medium-high heat until browned. This step enhances flavor.
- Slow Cooker Method: Place the diced onion and minced garlic in the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the seasoned pork shoulder on top of the onions and garlic.
- Slow Cook: Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, or until the pork is easily shredded with a fork.
- Instant Pot Method: Place the diced onion and minced garlic in the Instant Pot. Place the seasoned pork shoulder on top. Add 1 cup of water or broth.
- Instant Pot Pressure Cook: Secure the lid and cook on high pressure for 60-75 minutes, followed by a natural pressure release for 15 minutes.
- Shred the Pork: Once the pork is cooked, remove it from the slow cooker or Instant Pot and shred it using two forks. Discard any large pieces of fat.
- Combine and Simmer: Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker or Instant Pot and stir in your favorite BBQ sauce. Simmer on low for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Assemble the Sliders: Pile the BBQ pulled pork onto slider buns.
- Add Toppings: Top with coleslaw, pickles, or any other desired toppings.
- Serve: Serve the BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Substitution: For a spicier flavor, add an extra pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the BBQ sauce.
- Make-Ahead: The pulled pork can be made 1-2 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Reheat before serving.
- Storage: Leftover pulled pork can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheating: Reheat the pulled pork in a skillet over medium heat or in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, until heated through.
- Serving Suggestions: Serve with coleslaw, pickles, potato salad, or corn on the cob for a complete meal.
